Collectors and Porsche enthusiasts looking for the next air-cooled Porsche classic would be wise to check the less well-known, limited run Euro Carrera 2.7 MFI model. Porsche continued to extend the homologation of the legendary 1973 Carrera RS by introducing the Euro Carrera 2.7 MFI (mechanical fuel injection) model in 1974, thus having the same performance characteristics of the collectible 1973 Carrera RS.

With this model, Porsche wished to continue using the classic 2.7 MFI engine, which eventually grew into the powerful 2.8 MFI engine (308 HP) for the full race 911 RSR. However, U.S. pollution standards became even more stringent and Porsche could not certify the MFI system for the U.S. market. Instead, this model was made available only to European and Rest of World (ROW) markets in a limited run. Thus the same 2.7 Carrera RS engine and transmission from the 1973 version were fitted to the Euro G series short hood body.

All of the performance and chassis reinforcement modifications from the Carrera RS were carried over to the 1974 model, including Carrera flares with their distinctive shape and the iconic duck tail spoiler. Curb weight was comparable to the 1973 Carrera RS Touring model as well as an identical 0 – 60 MPH time of 5.5 seconds.

The 1974 Euro Carrera MFI RS presented here has been completely restored to a very high and correct standard. The car drives perfectly and looks wonderful. The beautiful and rare color of Bahama Blue (AKA Acid Blue) is one of four cars produced for the 1974 MY. Only 1026 coupes were made in 1974.

This car was restored with a correct RS Type 911/83 engine case with the proper RS MFI (019 pump) and S camshafts that make the RS engine unique and special. Note: The current RS spec engine isn’t the original case per the Kardex. However, the original matching numbers engine case has since been located and will be included with the car to insure documented collectability (engine case has been thoroughly cleaned and inspected).

1975 UK Ice Green Metallic Carrera

A UK-delivered Carrera 2.7 MFI in Ice Green Metallic, and quite a bit of rust, is being offered at the Silverstone auction on May 23rd, 2015.

The Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Coupe was introduced in 1974 on the new G-Series chassis that was built to appease ever-stricter US regulations for crash-worthiness. The floor pans were strengthened, lighting was improved and larger bumpers incorporated. With an impressive 210 bhp, 2,687 cc Type 911/83 air-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, 0-60 was achieved in just over 5 seconds and gearing was good for 150mph through a 5-speed manual transmission. The suspension was fully independent with torsion bars, McPherson struts and anti roll bars. The total weight was just over 1,075 kilograms, which made the Euro-spec 2.7 MFI a very fast car in its day. In fact, it was the fastest production 911 until the late 1980s. In total, 1,647 Euro-spec MFI Carrera coupes were built during this three-year run, along with 631 Targas, for total production figures not vastly outnumbering that of the original 1973 Carrera RS.

Offered here is an original right-hand drive UK-supplied Carrera MFI Coupe that was sold new to its first and current owner on 13th November 1975 by Swinford Motors of Stourbridge. It has covered a total mileage of 55,450 miles from new and is presented in highly original order. This sunroof-equipped model is believed to be one of one hundred and seventeen examples produced for delivery in all nations requiring right-hand drive. Currently, there are only 48 right-hand drive cars listed with the Carrera Registry, however, far fewer than that were delivered to the UK as many were sold to Japan and Australia.

This example represents an exciting restoration project for any Porsche collector, very rarely do cars of this nature and originality come onto the market. The body shell has never been welded and the car has never been restored or seen paint. The beautifully thin Lime Green Metallic finish has faded almost down to bare metal and is a joy to behold in detail.

There are some visible signs of rust on the bodywork, specifically to the rear wings and sills. However, the floors appear sound and the bonnet compartment and engine bay are structurally very sound. The interior is complete and untouched from new. The car was last taxed in 2008 and it has been SORN since. From 1975 until 2008 the car was maintained exclusively by respected Porsche specialist Chris Best from Two-Plus-Two. There are five service stamps in the book and many invoices for work carried out over the years. The only mechanical alteration to this vehicle has been the addition of stainless steel exchangers for the heating system.

The history file is complete with original wallet, service manuals and ownership paraphernalia. There are even letters between the current owner and the supplying dealer in 1975. Sold strictly as seen, we welcome any inspection on this fascinating piece of UK Porsche history.

1974 Carrera 2.7 MFI

This 1974 Carrera is available in Germany with various items changed over the years including the gas/oil gauge, steering wheel center, door speakers, missing Italian-style white front reflector, added side marker lights, etc. This Carreras still retains its rare midnight blue interior.

We are excited to offer on behalf of one of our clients this authentic and sought after Porsche Carrera 2.7l. Originally delivered to Italy, the car came to the US in 2008 and eventually ended up being part of a collection in Germany. This is a number’s matching, correct and authentic Euro spec. Carrera 2.7l. Very few of these cars come to market lately and most are altered and not quite correct, particularly as prices have been skyrocketing for these models.

Delivered in classic Grand Prix white with black scripts, this 74 is a “tail delete” Italian delivery, recognizable instantly by the amber side marker lights in the front fenders. The car has been gone through by Porsche Classic in Germany just recently to the tune of more than 30k Euros which included a full rebuild of the engine. Less than 1000km traveled since. Total miles on the car are about 112,000.00 kilometers (not miles).

Mechanically in perfect condition, paint, body and interior are largely un-restored and show some patina. Nevertheless, the car still shows gorgeous and is absolutely rust-free. The correct 7 & 8x15 inch Fuchs wheels have been refinished to factory specs recently.

We have been strong supporters of the Euro Carrera 2.7l long before the market woke up to these cars. This is essentially an RS with exactly the same engine and weight configuration, just packaged in the G-body. Please study all the photos closely to evaluate the condition of this car!

'76 Carrera 2.7 MFI Auction @ Essen

The last of the legend. The 1976 Carrera 2.7 MFI Sondermodell was not a standard production model and only sold new to buyers within Germany who knew they existed. The last RS type 911/83 engine fitted by the factory. The last mechanically fuel injected street 911.

Immediately after the legendary 1973 Carrera RS finished production a series of Carreras were built for the European market that were equivalent to the M472 optioned 73 RS Touring models. This rare and desirable Porsche was the G-series Carrera 2.7 MFI which used the same 911/83 RS mechanically fuel injected (MFI) engine that produced 210 bhp. The major difference between these Carreras and the RS was that they were built with the “G-series” body and interior instead of the earlier long hood form. The weight of the G-Series Carrera MFI was also 1075 kg like the 1973 RS Touring cars. All 1974 Carrera MFI cars either came with a ducktail or tail delete, while 1975 and later Carrera MFI either came with the whale tail or tail delete.

What makes the early 911s, Carrera RS, and the 2.7-liter “euro” Carrera so interesting and thrilling to drive is the Bosch Mechanical Fuel Injection (MFI) setup. The glorious sound and instantaneous throttle response has a remarkable feel compared to the computerized injection systems of the 70s and 80s. In the December 1974 issue of Motor magazine the Carrera 2.7 MFI was extensively tested and they measured a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds.

Porsche built only 123 Coupes and 30 Targas in 1976, as can be seen on the attched letter from the Porsche - Works, dated 24.02. 1999

These cars were never imported by Porsche into North America. The strict US emissions laws required smog equipment that drastically impacted the performance of the 2.7-liter motor. The US version of the Carrera in 1974-1975 used the significantly less powerful CIS (K-Jetronic) based injection engines to meet the California and US emission standards. This particular G series Carrera RS, was delivered new through the Porsche dealer Mahag Munchen in June 1976. As certified by Porsche in the cars file, it was finished in black, with a 'kunstleder schwarz' / black interior, with option code M481 a desirable five speed gearbox.

Invoices within the cars file account for its first engine rebuild in August 1990, through worldwide recognised tuners RUF Automobile GmbH. The invoice totals over 45,000 DM for this alone.

In its most recent history chassis 6609061 has resided within a significant European collection, and , as you would expect with a car of this pedigree is described to be in excellent condition and highly original. The car was subject to a re-sprayed in 2010, and the engine was once again overhauled at a cost of € 7,500 by Kobus Tuning in 2013. The car has covered very little mileage since.

Collectors must remember the bloodlines of the 1976 Carrera 2.7 MFI – it was the last street car Porsche ever produced with mechanical fuel injection. In fact there were only three MFI based cars produced by Porsche after 1976, all race cars. First were the ten turbocharged Porsche 934 ½, then Porsche 935 built for Group 5 , later, the twenty 3.0-liter 911 SC/RS (954) rally cars built in 1984 to compete in Group B.

With its 210 hp Carrera RS engine, this matching numbers, original colour combination G series Carrera RS is for the most discerning collector or Porsche connoisseur. One of 123 produced presented in excellent condition throughout and not to be missed before the car follows suit of its 1973 elder brother.
